'Poem for a Valentine Card' by Sophie Hannah

'Poem for a Valentine Card' by Sophie Hannah

We love Sophie Hannah's gloved Valentine poem, which honours the tradition of secrecy and anonymity that makes Valentine cards so much fun.

Sophie Hannah is a British poet and bestselling writer of crime fiction.  Her books have been translated into 39 languages.

We commissioned Devon-based illustrator Jan Brewerton to capture the teasing, stylish message of the poem.  Jan studied Fine Art at Coventry University and, after two years living and teaching in Italy, completed her post-graduate studies at Goldsmith's College, London.

  • The words inside...

    Poem for a Valentine Card

    You won't find any hints

Enclosed, no cryptic clues, no fingerprints,

    Nothing about the gender,

Background or occupation of the sender.

    Anonymous, unseen -

You're deeling with the all-time king or queen

    Of undercover loves.

The author of this valentine wore gloves.
